Nils Hogner (1893-1970)

American artist and author, better known for his art work than his writing. Born in Massachusetts in 1893 (possibly - there seems to be some dispute over his birthplace and date), of Swedish descent. He studied art in Boston and in Denmark. After running a trading post in New Mexico with his first wife he worked as a professor and met his second wife Dorothy Childs, who was an author. He illustrated a number of her books and also went on to write and illustrate some books of his own.

I am not sure what his interest was in horses but certainly some of his books were about horses and he also illustrated books by other horsy authors such as Glenn Balch.

His pony books are all for younger readers and in picture book format with lots of his charming illustrations (one is illustrated by another artist). The stories themselves are fairly simplistic but the art work, with its charming na´ve style. will appeal to many collectors.
